ABC Image Browser
Web Spider Tutorial
|
One of the newest features of ABC Image Browser is the Web Spider.
Using the spider, you may open web sites
as though they were image folders on your computer. After you have "opened" a web site, you
may copy the web site images to a permanent folder on your PC, email them to a friend, or
edit and save them to your computer. Below are some steps that will help you get
started using this new feature.

Web Sites that Require Special Authentication
More Tips and Notes
Standard Web Sites
1. Open the "Open Web Images" window.
On the left side of the main toolbar is a
button that resembles the Internet Explorer icon
.
Click it to open the "Open Web Images" window.
2a. Enter the web site information
The only field here that is required is the web site "Start Page". However, you may also enter
other information such as a user name and password for BASIC authentication or cookie information
for session authentication.
2b. Enter advanced web site information (Optional)
By default, the Web Spider crawls an entire web site looking for images to download.
However, there are several options on the "Advanced" tab that let you change how the
spider searches for images.
In the window below, we have entered information to allow us to check the entire
J3 Technologies web site, but we are only asking for images larger than 10KB and have
"screen" somewhere in the file name.
If you want only images from the first page, uncheck "Check Entire Web Site for Images"
and leave the "Hop Count" set to 0. If you want images
from the first page and all of the pages that it directly links to, then set the "Hop Count"
to 1. By default, only pages that reside on the web site you enter (in the Start Page field)
are checked for images. To grab images from other sites that are linked to from the first site,
uncheck "Load from Same Site Only".
3. Open the Web Site
Press the "Open" button and wait for the images to download. You may pause and then
continue downloading of images by pressing the "Pause" button on the folder window or
filmstrip. When there are no more images to download, the Pause button will disappear.
(When you press "Open" after making changes to a site's settings,
you will be prompted to save your changes and give your site a name if does not have one already.)
That's it! You have opened a web site! Below are some advanced tips to help you out.

Web Sites that Require Special Authentication (Cookies/Sessions)
Some sites require cookies/sessions for authentication. Follow the steps below
to open such a site.
1. Open Mini Web Browser
Repeat step 1 from above then click the "Browse" button next to the "Start Page" field.
2. Browse to the "Protected" Site
Login to the secure site using the site's Login Page.
3. Get Special Authentication Info
After you have logged into the web site using your login info, browse to the first page
that you want to open, then click the "Open" button. (If any unwanted windows pop-up, click their
"Close" or "Cancel" buttons.) After you click "Open" in the mini-browser, the current web page
address and cookies will be copied to the "Open Web Images" window.
(If you would like ABC Image Browser to prompt you to login the next time you open this web
site, check "This site requires me to login via a web page". You must save your site settings
for this to take affect.)
4. Open the "Protected" Site
Click the "Open" button to begin downloading the protected images.

More Tips and Notes
- "Web Folders" are read-only and are temporary.
- To keep these images you must copy them into a local folder.
- You may not "paste" images into "Web Folders"
- Deleting a web image removes it from your system, not the source web site.
- Cookies are never stored with your site settings.
